Lebanon’s former President Michel Aoun has strongly condemned Israel’s recent strikes on Iran, declaring that the offensive not only harmed the Iranian people but also sabotaged international efforts aimed at maintaining peace in the Middle East.

In a statement released by the Lebanese presidency on social media platform X, Aoun warned that Israel’s military action was a deliberate move to derail ongoing mediations that had shown promise in curbing rising tensions across the region.

He emphasized, “These attacks do not just impact Iran — they strike at the heart of every initiative intended to prevent war and ensure stability among regional nations.”

Aoun’s remarks came as world leaders and regional observers expressed alarm over Israel’s widening military operations, which have included simultaneous strikes across multiple Muslim-majority countries, including Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran.

Mediation Efforts Undermined by Escalating Violence

According to Aoun, the international community had made notable progress toward reaching “realistic and just solutions” to avoid a broader war in the Middle East. However, he stressed that the latest Israeli strikes threaten to undo these hard-won diplomatic gains.

“These attacks aim to undermine all current initiatives and mediations to prevent the deterioration of the situation,” he said. Aoun expressed deep concern that the path to peaceful resolution is now being sabotaged by Israel’s aggressive military campaign.

The strikes on Iran — particularly those that hit key nuclear and military sites — have led to heightened regional alert. Iran responded by launching drones in retaliation, prompting countries like Jordan and Saudi Arabia to shut down parts of their airspace as a precaution.

Lebanon, which shares a tense border with Israel and has a history of conflict involving Hezbollah, now finds itself increasingly concerned that renewed violence could spill over its territory.

A Call for Swift and Effective Global Action

In his statement, Aoun urged the international community to act decisively. He called on world powers, peacekeeping organizations, and diplomatic bodies to prevent Israel from “achieving its goals” of destabilizing the region.

“The international community must take swift and effective action to halt this aggression,” he declared. Aoun argued that unchecked military actions could trigger a dangerous spiral of retaliation, plunging the region into a large-scale war that would have devastating consequences for millions.

Lebanese officials have consistently warned that ongoing Israeli attacks, particularly those launched without international coordination or approval, pose a threat to the wider peace architecture of the region.

As of now, the United Nations has yet to release a formal condemnation, though several human rights organizations and some Western capitals have called for restraint. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is expected to convene an emergency session to address the escalating situation.

Aoun’s comments have added to a growing chorus of voices demanding accountability and immediate de-escalation to prevent further bloodshed and preserve what remains of diplomatic progress in the region.
