Zimbabwe’s star all-rounder Sikandar Raza has accused a local coach of racial abuse, prompting swift action from the Harare Metropolitan Cricket Association (HMCA). The incident allegedly occurred during a Vigne Cup match on June 1, intensifying concerns over discrimination in Zimbabwean domestic cricket.
Incident During Vigne Cup Match
Raza filed a formal complaint with HMCA, stating he was subjected to racial abuse by coach Blessing Mafuwa during a game between Old Hararians and Rainbow Cricket Club at the Old Hararians Sports Club. The abuse allegedly occurred as Raza walked off the field after scoring a brilliant 78 off 56 balls.
Though Raza did not initially name the coach, HMCA chairperson Tafadzwa Madoro later confirmed Mafuwa’s identity. In response, HMCA suspended Mafuwa from all cricket activities pending an investigation.
HMCA Responds Swiftly
“We received a report of racial abuse against our T20 captain last week,” Madoro told ESPNcricinfo. “Blessing Mafuwa will attend a hearing on Tuesday to answer the charges. In the meantime, he is suspended. We do not condone any racial abuse and aim to resolve this matter quickly.”

The HMCA emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward racism and committed to a transparent process.
Raza Calls for Accountability
Speaking out on the incident, Raza demanded a thorough investigation and urged officials to take a strong stand. “If found guilty, an example should be made out of him,” Raza said. “This must not happen again to this or any future generation.”
Raza has become one of Zimbabwe’s most influential players. His strong stance on this issue reflects growing calls for accountability and inclusion in cricket across the globe.
Strong Performance on the Field
Despite the off-field controversy, Raza starred in the match, helping Old Hararians post 402 for 9 in 50 overs. Rainbow Cricket Club could only manage 225 for 8 in 39 overs, losing by 142 runs via the DLS method.
This incident comes shortly after Raza’s triumph with Lahore Qalandars in the PSL 2025, where he also won the ILT20 earlier this year.
