A Karachi earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale struck parts of the city on Sunday evening, sending tremors through several neighborhoods. Although the quake caused no reported damage or injuries, the sudden jolts sparked fear among residents.

Epicenter Near Quaidabad

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake’s epicenter was near Quaidabad. It occurred at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers. The tremors were recorded at exactly 5:33 PM and were strong enough to be felt across multiple parts of the port city.

Locals reported brief shaking, prompting many to rush outdoors. The movement, though mild, served as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity. However, emergency response units confirmed that no structural damage or injuries had occurred.

Recent Seismic Activity in Karachi

This incident follows a slightly stronger earthquake that struck Karachi on March 31, 2025. That tremor measured 4.7 in magnitude, shaking the city and surrounding areas. It hit at 4:11 PM, with its epicenter located 75 kilometers north of Karachi and a depth of 19 kilometers, as per PMD data.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) provided similar findings but reported a magnitude of 4.6. Their data placed the epicenter 65 kilometers east-southeast of Uthal in Balochistan, again at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Karachi in a Seismically Active Zone

Experts continue to caution that Karachi lies within a seismically sensitive zone. Shallow quakes like Sunday’s are often more noticeable, even at lower magnitudes. While such tremors usually pass without major consequences, preparedness remains essential.

The PMD urges residents to stay informed through official updates and avoid spreading panic during seismic events. Authorities also recommend reviewing household safety measures to ensure readiness in case of stronger future quakes.
