The recent India-Pakistan air conflict has triggered political uproar in India, with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of misleading the nation about its aerial losses. His remarks follow an admission by India’s top general that Pakistan shot down Indian fighter jets during the May 6–7 exchange.

Congress Demands Answers

Kharge stated the “fog of war is now clearing” after General Anil Chauhan acknowledged aircraft losses. He urged the immediate convening of a special Parliament session to address unanswered questions. Congress also called for an independent review of India’s defense preparedness, similar to the Kargil Review Committee.

Congress leader and Telangana Minister Uttam Reddy, a former air force pilot, echoed the demand for transparency. He noted that earlier statements from Air Marshal Bharti and the DGMO had hinted at the losses, which the government continued to deny.

Pakistan Downs Six Indian Jets

According to reports, the Pakistan Air Force downed six Indian fighter jets during retaliatory strikes. The Indian Air Force had launched missile attacks on six Pakistani locations, including religious sites in Bahawalpur, Muzaffarabad, Kotli, and Muridke. In response, Pakistan shot down three Rafale jets, one Su-30MKI, one Mirage 2000, and one MiG-29—within 40 minutes.

No Pakistani aircraft crossed into Indian territory or engaged in dogfights. The conflict escalated further with drone interceptions on May 8 and mutual airbase strikes on May 9–10. A US-brokered ceasefire on May 10 finally ended the standoff.

BJP MLA Sparks Further Controversy

Adding fuel to the fire, BJP lawmaker Ranbir Pathania allegedly mocked the Indian Air Force’s performance during Operation Sindoor, claiming personnel were “sleeping” at the Udhampur base. Though Pathania denied insulting the military, Congress called his remarks disgraceful and demanded his dismissal.

Pathania later defended his stance, saying his video was edited and that he only opposed the IAF’s land acquisition without compensation in Udhampur. Congress warned that inaction by the BJP would reflect its collective mindset on the issue.
