Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has expressed hope that the recent India-Pakistan ceasefire will help restore peace and prevent further escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. His comments came during the opening session of the GCC-USA summit held in Riyadh on Wednesday.

Praise for Diplomatic De-escalation

The crown prince welcomed the ceasefire agreement, which was brokered by the United States after a week of intense military exchanges involving missile strikes, drones, and cross-border artillery fire.

“We welcome the ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India and hope that it will contain escalation and restore calm between the two countries,” he said, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Saudi Arabia, along with other international partners, played a diplomatic role in reducing tensions during one of the most serious flare-ups in recent years.

Regional Peace and Security

During the summit, which was attended by U.S. President Donald Trump, the crown prince emphasized the Kingdom’s broader aim of promoting peace across the region.

“Our objective is to ensure security and peace for the peoples of the region,” he stated. “We support all efforts aimed at resolving crises and halting conflicts through peaceful means.”

He also called for a permanent solution to the Palestinian issue and an end to the war in Gaza, pledging cooperation with GCC allies and the United States to de-escalate tensions across the Middle East.

Backdrop of Conflict

The India-Pakistan conflict erupted after a deadly militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir last month. The violence quickly escalated into open hostilities, including missile launches and drone incursions, pushing both nations to the brink of war.

Although the ceasefire, announced on May 10, has paused large-scale attacks, both sides remain cautious. Sporadic skirmishes have continued along the Line of Control, with each nation accusing the other of violations.

India and Pakistan have fought multiple wars over Kashmir since their independence in 1947. The region remains a deeply rooted source of rivalry and instability in South Asia.
