Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed gradually ending the military aid Israel receives from the United States, according to Maariv daily.

Speaking to the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Sunday evening, Netanyahu said, “I think we will need to wean ourselves off American military aid.”

Currently, Israel receives $4 billion annually in U.S. military support. Netanyahu’s statement marks a significant shift in tone, as U.S. aid has been a core element of Israel’s defense funding for decades.

He did not elaborate on the reasoning behind his remarks. However, the statement comes at a time of growing tension. Reports have emerged about strained ties between Netanyahu and former U.S. President Donald Trump, alongside ongoing direct talks between Hamas and the U.S. regarding the release of captives.

Observers suggest that Netanyahu’s comment may signal a move toward greater military independence or reflect frustration over U.S. diplomatic pressures amid the Gaza conflict.

So far, there has been no official response from the White House or the Pentagon.

The comment has sparked debate within Israel’s political circles, as many lawmakers see U.S. aid as critical to maintaining Israel’s military edge in the region.
