Gaza – Hamas announced Sunday that it will release Edan Alexander, the last known living American hostage in Gaza, within the next 48 hours. The move is part of broader efforts to restart ceasefire negotiations, reopen Gaza crossings, and resume humanitarian aid deliveries.

Two Hamas officials confirmed the planned release to the Associated Press. The gesture comes days ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s expected visit to the Middle East.

Trump’s Envoy Confirms Release

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s envoy, confirmed Hamas’ decision in a message to the AP.

He said Hamas made the release in good faith as a gesture toward Trump and the efforts of mediators Qatar and Egypt.

“Hamas took this step in good faith toward the United States and the mediators’ efforts… to end this very brutal war,” Trump posted on Truth Social Sunday evening. “Hopefully this is the first of those final steps necessary to end this brutal conflict.”

Alexander’s Background

Edan Alexander, 21, is an Israeli-American soldier who grew up in New Jersey. He was abducted during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, that triggered the war in Gaza.

Israeli Reaction and Ceasefire Hopes

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said it was notified by the U.S. that Alexander would be released “without compensation or conditions.” Israel views this step as a potential pathway to restart truce negotiations.

Netanyahu’s government had previously opposed U.S. direct talks with Hamas. But recent developments suggest a shift, especially as pressure mounts for a ceasefire and hostage release.

Hamas Signals Readiness for Long-Term Deal

Hamas official Khalil al-Hayyah said the group is ready to begin “intensive negotiations” for a long-term truce. This includes ending the war, exchanging prisoners, and handing over control of Gaza to a neutral technocratic authority.

A senior Hamas official said Alexander’s release was advised as a “gift” to Trump to open broader negotiations.

Egypt, Qatar Mediate Behind the Scenes

Egyptian and Qatari mediators have played a crucial role. An Egyptian official said the Trump administration gave assurances that Alexander’s release would reopen all files — including an end to the war and aid access.

Indirect U.S.-Hamas talks began five days ago, with both sides confirming Alexander’s release is aimed at creating momentum for further progress.

Family Remains Silent

Alexander’s parents have not yet commented on the latest developments. However, his mother, Yael, previously said hearing Edan’s name from officials kept hope alive.

Witkoff is now en route to the region, signaling the seriousness of this breakthrough.

The release of Edan Alexander could mark a turning point in one of the longest and bloodiest conflicts in the region’s recent history.
