Pakistan is preparing to issue a formal diplomatic notice to India over its unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), a move Islamabad views as a serious breach of international obligations. The decision follows emergency consultations among Pakistan’s foreign affairs, water resources, and law ministries.

Diplomatic Push Against India’s Move

Official sources revealed that Pakistan’s ministries have finalized the draft of a notice that will soon be sent to New Delhi via diplomatic channels. The notice will demand a legal explanation for India’s decision to suspend the decades-old treaty, which governs the sharing of Indus River waters between the two countries.

Legal and Global Strategy in Motion

Authorities confirmed that legal and constitutional reviews have already been conducted. Officials within the Indus Commission stated that Pakistan intends to challenge India’s action through global forums, branding it as a form of “water aggression.”

Rising Tensions Post-Pahalgam Attack

The diplomatic crisis follows a deadly April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian-occupied Kashmir, which left 26 people dead. However India quickly blamed Pakistan without presenting evidence and retaliated by suspending the IWT and sealing the Wagah-Attari border.

Pakistan, in response, condemned the attack and offered full cooperation for an impartial investigation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the need for a neutral probe and warned against escalation.

Tit-for-Tat Measures on the Table

Pakistan has signaled it may suspend the Simla Agreement of 1972 in response to India’s actions. However Discussions are underway to counter New Delhi’s diplomatic and strategic pressure through reciprocal measures.

Meanwhile, Indian leaders have issued veiled military threats. In response, Pakistan’s civil and military leadership has warned that any misadventure will trigger a decisive and unforgettable reply.
