>In a major push for eco-friendly transport, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the launch of electric buses in Punjab across 24 districts. The move aims to ease public travel and cut air pollution under the Punjab Clean Air Program.

Initial Phase Targets Key Districts

While chairing a high-level meeting in Lahore on Saturday, the Chief Minister approved the provision of 240 electric buses for immediate deployment in various districts. The goal is to enhance public transport accessibility while reducing carbon emissions.

From August to October, the government will introduce 500 electric buses in the major urban centers of Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi, and Bahawalpur. These areas were prioritized due to their population density and rising transport needs.

Next Phase to Expand Fleet Further

According to the Transport Department, the initiative will scale up rapidly. Between November and December, an additional 600 electric buses will arrive in Punjab to serve more regions. This will mark one of the largest expansions of an electric public transport system in the country.

Clean Air Focused Cities Get Priority

Under the Punjab Clean Air Program, 400 electric buses will be distributed across Lahore, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, and Sheikhupura. These areas have been identified for immediate intervention due to deteriorating air quality and high traffic congestion.

Maryam Nawaz stressed that the project is not just about convenience, but about public health and environmental responsibility. She directed the Transport Department to remove any bureaucratic delays and ensure timely execution of all public interest projects.

Fast-Tracking Green Mobility

The Chief Minister’s directive reflects the provincial government’s urgent commitment to cleaner transport and sustainable urban development. By modernizing public transit, Punjab aims to reduce vehicular emissions and offer safer, more efficient commuting options to its citizens.
