Canada has extradited a 20-year-old Pakistani citizen, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, to the United States over his alleged role in a terror plot targeting a Jewish center in New York City. U.S. authorities say Khan, also known as “Shahzeb Jadoon,” planned a Daesh-inspired mass shooting on the anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Middle East conflict.

Daesh-Inspired Attack Foiled

Khan now faces charges in the Southern District of New York. He is accused of attempting to provide material support to Daesh and planning acts of terrorism beyond national borders. Officials say he aimed to use AR-style rifles in an attack on a Brooklyn Jewish center.

According to U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton, Khan hoped to cause maximum casualties among the Jewish community. He allegedly chose New York because it hosts the largest Jewish population in the U.S.

Detailed Planning and Online Radicalization

Khan reportedly began sharing Daesh propaganda on encrypted apps in late 2023. He then contacted undercover law enforcement agents posing as extremists. Over time, he outlined plans for a “coordinated assault” and even changed his target from another city to New York City, citing its symbolic and demographic importance.

Khan identified specific locations, urged the acquisition of weapons and knives, and scouted rental properties near the target. He also discussed using a human smuggler to cross the U.S.-Canada border.

Timeline of Events

Khan was provisionally arrested on September 4, 2024, near Ormstown, Canada — just 12 miles from the U.S. border. Authorities say he used three different cars to avoid detection during his cross-country journey.

He allegedly planned the attack around October 7, viewing it as a symbolic date tied to the ongoing Middle East conflict and Jewish observances. During his conversations, he declared his intent to carry out what he believed could be the deadliest attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.

Charges and Legal Action

Khan faces two serious federal charges. If convicted, he could receive a life sentence. The FBI’s New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago offices led the investigation. The U.S. Justice Department coordinated his extradition from Canada.
