Palestinian human rights organization Al-Haq has condemned Israel’s interception of the aid ship Madleen, calling it an illegal act under international law. The Ramallah-based group issued a strong statement demanding the immediate release of all those detained, including high-profile activists like Greta Thunberg and MEP Rima Hassan.

“Israel has no legal authority to restrict access to Palestine, since such is within the exclusive right of the Palestinian people,” Al-Haq stated, criticizing the interception as a violation of sovereignty and maritime law. The ship was stopped by Israeli forces in international waters on June 8 while carrying humanitarian supplies to Gaza.

‘Blockade Is a Tool of Genocide’

Al-Haq further accused Israel of using the blockade as a tool of genocide, citing the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “Israel’s manufacture of famine as a tool of genocide, and its blockade of Gaza, is designed to isolate, fragment and destroy the Palestinian people,” the organization said.

The Madleen, which departed Sicily on June 1, was carrying food, baby formula, and medical supplies for civilians in Gaza. Its mission was symbolic, aiming to break the blockade and draw attention to the humanitarian crisis.

The group called on the international community to intervene, not only for the release of the crew but also to challenge the broader legality of Israel’s blockade on Gaza.

As global concern mounts, Al-Haq’s statement adds to the growing list of voices demanding accountability for what many now describe as an unlawful and dangerous escalation in restricting humanitarian aid.
