Pakistan UNSC diplomacy enters a critical phase today as a high-level delegation, led by Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, begins meetings with 14 of 15 United Nations Security Council (UNSC) member states. These talks come in response to recent tensions with India following a deadly terror attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Key Diplomatic Push

The Pakistani team includes top political figures such as Senator Sherry Rehman, Hina Rabbani Khar, Dr Musadik Malik, Khurram Dastgir Khan, Bushra Anjum Butt, Tehmina Janjua, and Jalil Abbas Jilani. They aim to challenge India’s version of events and explain Pakistan’s position on the military confrontation that unfolded in May.

Engaging the Global Community

Beyond the UNSC, the delegation will meet ambassadors from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Non-Aligned Movement. The group will also address the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA), along with Pakistani journalists based in New York.

Meanwhile, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi will lead a separate delegation to Moscow starting today, further expanding Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach.

Missed Media Opportunities

However, no official plans have been announced for meetings with American media outlets, human rights watchdogs, or organisations that combat disinformation. This gap has raised concerns about missed opportunities to influence broader global opinion, especially in the West.

The diplomatic campaign follows Pakistan’s military response, “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos”, launched after the IIOJK attack. The conflict ended in a U.S.-brokered ceasefire on May 10, with Pakistan reporting 53 fatalities, including 13 military personnel.
