Glenn Maxwell ODI retirement marks the end of a thrilling era in Australian cricket. The allrounder has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals to focus on the shortest format of the game, aiming for a strong run at the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

A Decade of Impact

Maxwell’s ODI journey began in 2012 and lasted until 2025. In 149 matches, he scored 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 with a blistering strike rate of 126.70.

Shifting Gears for T20s

Cricket Australia confirmed Maxwell’s decision, stating it aligns with preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup. He also intends to focus on the Big Bash League and other international T20 commitments.

Maxwell explained that physical challenges influenced his decision. “I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting,” he said on the Final Word Podcast. “I had a good chat with George Bailey, and I told him I wouldn’t make it to the 2027 World Cup. It’s time for someone else to step into this role.”

Leaving on His Terms

Maxwell emphasized he never wanted to continue “for selfish reasons.” However He believes Australia is heading in a clear direction and hopes his exit opens space for new talent to prepare for the future.

George Bailey praised Maxwell’s contribution, calling him “one of the most dynamic players” in ODI history. Though he’s stepping away from the 50-over format, Maxwell remains a key figure in Australia’s T20 plans for the year ahead.
