Israel’s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, sparked outrage on Sunday after storming the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem. He was joined by thousands of settlers and politicians to mark Jerusalem Day, a controversial event that celebrates the occupation of Palestinian land since 1967.
Ben-Gvir released a video from the compound, calling for “victory in the Gaza war, the return of hostages, and support for Shin Bet’s new chief, David Zini.” His visit was backed by heavily armed Israeli police and soldiers.
‘A Dangerous Provocation,’ Say Palestinians
Al-Aqsa is the third holiest site in Islam. Ben-Gvir’s presence there, especially during the ongoing Gaza war, is seen as a deliberate provocation. His actions have drawn sharp criticism from Palestinian officials, who labeled the event “a dangerous escalation and religious provocation.”
The visit comes at a time when Israeli forces continue heavy bombardment on Gaza, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life. Aid agencies warn of a deepening humanitarian crisis, as access to food, water, fuel, and medical supplies remains blocked.

Ben-Gvir has previously demanded tighter restrictions on Palestinians, a full siege on Gaza, and rejection of any humanitarian aid. His agenda includes expanding illegal settlements and increasing military operations in Palestinian areas.
Other Officials Joined the Raid
Accompanying Ben-Gvir were Negev and Galilee Minister Yitzhak Vaserlauf and Knesset member Yitzhak Kreuzer. Together, they walked through the courtyards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque under police protection.
The event was widely covered on Israeli media and social platforms, showing the far-right bloc flexing political power while pushing religious-nationalist ideologies.
Al-Aqsa a Flashpoint for Conflict
The Al-Aqsa compound is often at the center of Israeli-Palestinian tensions. Under a long-standing agreement, Jews are allowed to visit but not pray there. However, Ben-Gvir’s visit and remarks clearly violate this status quo, triggering fears of further unrest.
His actions also raise concerns about Israel’s future plans for East Jerusalem, which Palestinians seek as the capital of their future state.
Global Reactions Expected
International bodies, including the United Nations and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, are likely to condemn the visit. Past incursions into Al-Aqsa have resulted in widespread protests across the Muslim world.
Human rights groups continue to call for accountability, de-escalation, and respect for international law. As Gaza bleeds and tensions rise in the West Bank, such acts only fuel anger and resistance.
