Karachi is set to endure a harsh five-day heatwave, starting Thursday, with meteorologists warning of elevated health risks due to high temperatures and humidity. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued an official alert, cautioning residents to take preventive measures as the city braces for intensified heat conditions.

Extreme Weather Ahead

According to the PMD, daytime temperatures are expected to remain around 35°C. However, due to high humidity levels—ranging from 70% to 80%—the real feel may spike to 40°C or more.

Humidity to Amplify Discomfort

High moisture in the air plays a major role in making the heat more unbearable. Even if the thermometer reads lower, the humidity could push the body’s stress levels much higher. The combination of heat and humidity is especially dangerous, making hydration and sun protection vital.

Authorities Advise Caution

Officials have urged Karachiites to remain indoors during peak heat hours. They recommend staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and avoiding strenuous activities outside. The public has also been advised to monitor weather updates regularly and to avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, particularly between noon and 4 PM.

Tips for Staying Safe

  • Keep cool: Use fans, air conditioners, or damp towels. Light, loose clothing helps your body cool naturally.

  • Stay hydrated: Drink water frequently, even if you’re not feeling thirsty.

  • Limit activities: Plan outdoor work for early morning or evening hours. Cancel or reschedule events during the hottest times.

  • Stay informed: Keep up with PMD updates and local health advisories.

Karachi’s heatwave is part of a broader pattern of rising temperatures across Pakistan. As climate conditions shift, such events may become more frequent, making preparedness and community awareness more crucial than ever.
