NEW DELHI: India has imposed a complete ban on imports from Pakistan. The move comes after a deadly attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) killed at least 26 tourists last week.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade announced the decision on Thursday. “This restriction is imposed in the interest of national security and public policy,” it said.

The ban applies to all goods originating in or transiting via Pakistan. It will take effect immediately, under India’s revised Foreign Trade Policy 2023.

Pakistan Responds with Countermeasures

Islamabad has also blocked imports from India. It closed its airspace to Indian carriers, expelled Indian diplomats, and halted all border trade.

In a stern warning, Pakistan said any Indian move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty would be treated as an act of war. The decades-old treaty governs water-sharing between the two nations.

Islamabad claims it has “credible intelligence” that India may launch military action. Meanwhile, New Delhi accuses Pakistan of backing the Pahalgam attack — a claim Pakistan denies.

Border Tensions Intensify

Cross-border firing has erupted along the Line of Control (LoC). Both armies have exchanged fire in recent days, heightening fears of a larger military escalation.

The United Nations has urged both countries to show “maximum restraint” as the situation grows more volatile.

Civilians Bear the Brunt

Kashmiris across India are reporting a surge in harassment and violence. Right-wing groups have launched mob attacks, accusing Muslims of aiding militants.

Shops and businesses in the Kashmir valley observed a complete shutdown after the killings. Candlelight vigils and protest marches were held in several towns. Local newspapers printed black front pages in mourning.

Trade Already in Decline

Bilateral trade between India and Pakistan had already dropped sharply in recent years. Tensions have remained high since India revoked Kashmir’s special status in 2019.

The recent attack has reignited hostilities. With both nations arming their rhetoric and taking retaliatory steps, observers fear a slide into deeper conflict.

Nuclear Shadow Looms

Both countries possess nuclear weapons. Analysts warn that any military escalation could have devastating consequences across South Asia.

Diplomatic channels remain quiet. So far, there are no signs of backchannel talks or third-party mediation.
