Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday to discuss the volatile security situation in South Asia.

In an official statement, the Pakistan Mission to the UN said, “The discussion focused on the evolving security situation in South Asia as well as the imperative of de-escalation and the efforts being made to that effect.” The envoy emphasized Pakistan’s consistent call for peace and regional stability. “The Ambassador reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and stability,” the statement added.

This high-level meeting comes amid growing concern following a recent armed attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir, which has escalated hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

UN Chief in Contact with Leaders of Both Nations

Earlier in the day, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric addressed questions during a routine press briefing at UN headquarters. When asked whether the UN chief planned to visit India and Pakistan, Dujarric clarified that Guterres had already engaged both sides through diplomatic channels.

“The Secretary-General offered his good offices during his phone calls to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar,” Dujarric noted. However, he ruled out immediate travel, stating, “There would be no visit unless both countries explicitly accept the Secretary-General’s mediation role.”

UN Reacts to Alarming Rhetoric from India

Journalists further pressed the UN on India’s aggressive stance. One correspondent referenced Indian officials allegedly threatening to implement a Gaza-style military model in Kashmir. Responding to the heightened rhetoric, Dujarric reiterated the Secretary-General’s proactive communication.

“The Secretary-General, as I said, spoke very soon after the attack in Kashmir,” Dujarric responded. “He offered his good offices and communicated directly with both governments.”

Pakistan Calls Out Election Tactics

Tensions have escalated not only due to the Kashmir incident but also amid accusations from Pakistani officials that India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is exploiting national security issues to influence elections. Pakistan’s military spokesperson, Director General ISPR, recently accused the BJP of orchestrating false-flag operations to provoke conflict and sway public opinion.

Diplomatic Push for Peace Intensifies

The recent developments mark a renewed push by Pakistan to internationalize the Kashmir issue and seek global intervention in preventing further escalation. Analysts view the meeting between Ambassador Ahmad and Guterres as part of a broader strategy to urge global powers to step in before the situation deteriorates further.

As diplomatic channels stay active, all eyes remain on New Delhi and Islamabad. Whether both nations will agree to UN-led mediation remains uncertain. For now, the United Nations is keeping communication open and reiterating its commitment to peace and dialogue in the region.
