Amid escalating US-China tariffs, Washington has reportedly approached Beijing to open dialogue on the growing trade rift. According to a Chinese state media-linked account, the Trump administration is pushing for discussions through multiple backchannels to ease tensions sparked by steep import duties.
US Makes the First Move
Yuyuan Tantian, a social media account linked to Chinese broadcaster CCTV, reported that the United States has “proactively reached out” to China through various channels to address the tariff issue. The move comes after President Donald Trump claimed during a media interview that negotiations were underway and that Chinese President Xi Jinping had called him.
China Denies Contact
However, China’s foreign ministry disputed the claim. Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated, “As far as I know, there have been no consultations or negotiations between China and the US on tariffs.” Chinese officials have accused Washington of misleading the public about the state of trade relations.
Beijing firmly rejected any suggestion that talks were happening, reinforcing its position by pointing to the lack of formal communication.

Tariff War Escalates
In April, the US imposed harsh new tariffs, with rates reaching up to 145% on Chinese goods. In retaliation, Beijing hit back with 125% tariffs on a wide range of American imports. The standoff has intensified global concerns over trade disruptions and economic fallout.
According to Chinese media analysis, Washington appears more eager to return to the negotiating table. “From a negotiation standpoint, the US is currently the more anxious party,” Yuyuan Tantian stated. It added that the Trump administration is under mounting domestic and international pressure.
Trump Hints at a Deal — On US Terms
Despite the conflicting signals, Trump remained optimistic during a NewsNation town hall. “There’s a very good chance we’re going to make a deal,” he said. “But we’re going to make it on our terms, and it’s got to be fair.”
The ongoing uncertainty underscores the high stakes in the US-China trade conflict — a dispute that could reshape global markets if left unresolved.
