PESHAWAR: Torrential monsoon rains have unleashed chaos across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, triggering deadly flash floods and landslides in the Swat region. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), 11 people have lost their lives and six others are injured in weather-related incidents since Friday.
The casualties include four men, three women, and four children. The Swat River, swollen from continuous rain, breached its banks and flooded surrounding areas. The PDMA report confirmed that Swat has suffered the highest number of fatalities, along with major damage to infrastructure and homes.
As per the damage assessment, 56 homes have been affected — six completely destroyed and 50 partially damaged. Relief efforts are underway, with 136 trucks of supplies dispatched to Swat under the province’s monsoon contingency plan.

Tourists Drown in Fizagat as River Surges Unexpectedly
The most tragic incident occurred in Fizagat, where 17 people from two families — visiting from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab — drowned after being swept away by a sudden flood surge in the Swat River. The families were reportedly having breakfast near the riverbank when the water level rose without warning.

According to Swat’s Deputy Commissioner, a total of 73 people were trapped due to flash floods in the area. Rescue operations began immediately, but several victims had already been taken by the raging waters.
A heart-wrenching video of the incident went viral on social media, showing women and children desperately clinging to rocks and each other as the water surged around them. Onlookers can be seen shouting helplessly from the riverbank, unable to reach those in distress.

PDMA Warns of More Flood Risk in KP
With the situation still evolving, the PDMA has issued flood alerts for the districts of Nowshera and Charsadda, urging local administrations to prepare for similar emergencies. The provincial government has released Rs450 million in relief funds for immediate assistance to flood victims.
Rescue 1122 teams, along with local authorities, are continuing search-and-rescue efforts in affected areas. Emergency camps have also been set up for displaced families.
The PDMA has urged citizens to avoid riverbanks, especially during and after heavy rainfall, and to stay alert to further advisories.
