TEHRAN – Iranian police have announced the interception of 14 Israeli drones across various provinces, as tensions between the two countries remain dangerously high. The Iranian Labour News Agency (ILNA) quoted police spokesperson Saeed Montazerolmahdi, who said security forces also located hostile drone-producing workshops and drone-transporting vehicles during operations conducted in recent days.
“These operations were part of broader national efforts to safeguard airspace and dismantle foreign surveillance and strike networks,” Montazerolmahdi stated. The drones were reportedly identified before they could complete their missions, though specific details about the locations or nature of the missions were not disclosed.
Iran has heightened its domestic security response following increasing threats of Israeli military action, especially targeting the capital and military installations. Officials have urged calm but confirmed that multiple preventive operations are underway nationwide.
Commerce Carries On in Tehran Despite Fears
Amid the ongoing security threats and fears of new Israeli attacks, life in Tehran has not come to a complete halt. Iran’s Press TV reported that some businesses, grocery stores, and bakeries remain open, with citizens continuing to shop and access essential services.
Images shared by the outlet on social media platform X showed Tehranis lining up for bread, buying produce, and walking through local markets. The footage stood in stark contrast to growing reports of residents fleeing the capital, painting a picture of resilience in the face of uncertainty.
Despite the tense atmosphere, Press TV highlighted that many neighborhoods are functioning with a sense of cautious normalcy. “People are preparing for the worst but carrying on with life as best they can,” the broadcaster said.
Mass Exodus from Tehran Underway
Thousands of residents have reportedly begun leaving Tehran, fearing imminent attacks. The capital, home to around 10 million people spread across 22 districts, has seen a surge in outbound traffic over the past few days. Locals are using private vehicles, buses, and even informal ride-sharing options to move to rural or less-targeted areas.
However, not all citizens have been able to leave. Some residents told Al Jazeera their families remain trapped due to medical conditions, financial barriers, or a lack of transportation options.
“My elderly parents are too ill to travel, and I can’t leave them behind,” said one resident. Others expressed determination to stay despite the risks. “We’re not going to run. We’ve lived through threats before,” said another.
Authorities Boost Security, Urge Public Vigilance
In response to the heightened threat, Iranian security forces have increased their presence around strategic locations, including military bases, communication centers, and key government facilities. Checkpoints and patrols have also become more frequent throughout the capital.
While officials have not imposed a curfew, they have advised citizens to avoid large gatherings, remain indoors at night, and report any suspicious activity. Iran’s emergency services are on high alert as tensions escalate.
With diplomacy stalled and hostilities rising, Tehran’s population faces the dual challenge of staying alert to security threats while trying to preserve a sense of everyday life.
