As cyber threats rise, Pakistan’s top cybersecurity body has called for responsible use of social media. The National Computer Emergency Response Team (PKCERT) issued a public advisory, warning citizens about growing digital risks, especially on popular online platforms.

Children and Women Most at Risk

The advisory stressed that children face increasing exposure to harmful online content. This includes explicit material and potential grooming by predators. Women are particularly vulnerable to identity theft, cyber harassment, and image-based abuse. PKCERT pointed out that these risks are worsened by existing social and cultural inequalities.

Manipulative Content and Emotional Triggers

PKCERT warned users to remain aware of manipulative content designed to stir emotions like anger, fear, or shock. Such posts often go viral because they trigger impulsive reactions. The advisory added that social media algorithms intentionally amplify emotionally charged content, keeping users engaged longer—even if the material is misleading or harmful.

Disinformation and Digital Scams

Another major concern is the spread of disinformation and fraud. PKCERT highlighted that fake news, impersonation, and phishing attempts have become more frequent. Users are often tricked into revealing personal information or clicking harmful links, putting their privacy and security at risk.

Steps to Stay Safe

To stay protected, PKCERT advised users to set strong, unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication. Avoid sharing real-time location and regularly update apps to guard against security flaws.

The advisory also encouraged users to verify information before sharing it. Cross-checking news from reliable sources and staying sceptical of viral trends can reduce the spread of false narratives.

Building a Safer Digital Space

By following safety guidelines, users can help build a healthier and more secure online environment. PKCERT’s message is clear: digital freedom comes with the responsibility to stay informed, alert, and cautious in the face of evolving cyber threats.
