The fragile India-Pakistan ceasefire faced a serious blow after fresh overnight clashes erupted in the disputed Kashmir region, just hours after both nations had agreed to halt hostilities. Military action and aerial activity have raised concerns over the sustainability of the truce.
India Claims High-Profile Strikes
On Sunday, India’s Director General of Military Operations, Lt. Gen. Rajiv Ghai, claimed that Indian forces conducted precision strikes inside Pakistan-controlled Kashmir earlier this week. He said the strikes destroyed nine militant infrastructure sites, including bases used by the Lashkar-e-Taiba group.
According to Ghai, over 100 militants, including top leadership figures, were killed. “We achieved total surprise,” he said during a press conference in New Delhi. He described Pakistan’s reaction as “erratic and rattled.” However, independent verification of these claims remains unavailable.

Clashes Resume Despite Truce
The ceasefire agreement, reached just a day earlier, was meant to end one of the most dangerous military escalations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in decades. However, fighting resumed late Saturday in Kashmir. Both sides accused each other of violating the freshly agreed terms.
Indian officials reported drone activity over Indian-administered Kashmir and the western state of Gujarat late into the night. These sightings have intensified suspicion and distrust between the two militaries.
Trigger for Renewed Tensions
The latest round of violence followed a deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir last week. India quickly blamed Pakistan for the massacre, but Islamabad strongly denied any involvement.
Diplomatic Efforts at Risk
While military officials had initiated talks to cool tensions, the overnight flare-ups have jeopardized those efforts. Observers warn that continued skirmishes could undo the diplomatic progress made so far.
The international community, especially regional powers and global institutions, remains watchful. As both countries trade accusations, the ceasefire stands on shaky ground—highlighting how fragile peace remains in the Kashmir conflict.
