After days of intense conflict, Pakistan-India escalation has come to a halt with both countries agreeing to a full and immediate ceasefire. The announcement followed U.S.-mediated talks and high-level diplomatic engagement from global powers.
Operation Sindoor and Initial Strikes
On May 7, India launched a surprise offensive titled Operation Sindoor, targeting six Pakistani localities with 24 confirmed missile impacts. The strikes killed 33 civilians and injured 76. In response, Pakistan’s military downed five Indian jets and destroyed several Indian military installations along the Line of Control.
Pakistan Responds with Force
The Pakistan Army quickly retaliated. It launched Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, targeting Indian checkposts and brigade headquarters. Since May 7, Pakistan reported shooting down 77 Indian drones, marking a significant response to India’s aggression.
Further Escalation on May 10
India continued the hostilities by firing air-to-ground missiles at three Pakistani airbases. Islamabad immediately struck back, deepening concerns of a wider regional conflict. The clashes followed Pakistan’s repeated warnings about an imminent Indian military strike after the Pahalgam tragedy.

Ceasefire Achieved Through Diplomacy
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the ceasefire via his Truth Social platform, stating it was achieved after prolonged overnight negotiations. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also confirmed that the ceasefire was “full-fledged” and applied “all across, everywhere.”
Widespread International Involvement
British and Turkish diplomats played key roles in de-escalation efforts. Saudi Arabia, the UK, and the U.S. urged dialogue and peace. The Aga Khan also appealed for restraint in a letter to PM Shehbaz and the UN chief.
Restoring Peace and Normalcy
Following the agreement, Pakistan reopened its airspace for all flights. Relief packages were announced for victims of the strikes, and national leaders praised the military’s role in defending the country. While tensions have cooled for now, many stress the importance of continued diplomacy to avoid future flare-ups.
