Dar Says Pakistan’s Foreign Policy Anchored in Geo-Economics

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized Pakistan’s shift toward a geo-economics-driven foreign policy during a speech at the 52nd anniversary of the Institute for Strategic Studies (ISSI). He said the focus now lies on economic diplomacy, regional cooperation, and strategic partnerships to ensure peace and prosperity in South Asia.

Focus on Regional Cooperation

Dar called for a reimagined South Asian region built on mutual benefit. In contrast, he highlighted recent diplomatic strides, including a trilateral cooperation mechanism with China and Bangladesh and renewed efforts to stabilize ties with Afghanistan.

Trilateral Efforts and Afghanistan Ties

The minister mentioned the April 19 visit to Kabul and the Pakistan-China-Afghanistan trilateral meeting in Beijing, which he said marked a “qualitative shift” in ties with Afghanistan. He confirmed that Pakistan has agreed to extend CPEC into Afghanistan. Dar urged the Afghan interim government to prevent the use of its territory for cross-border terrorism.

Strategic and Global Relations

Dar said Pakistan’s long-standing partnership with China is reaching new heights, while its relations with the US are expanding in both “scope and substance.” He also noted growing ties with Russia, the EU, Japan, ASEAN, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. This broader outreach reflects Pakistan’s intent to navigate global shifts with a forward-looking approach.

India, Kashmir, and Security Concerns

On regional security, Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir and condemned India’s “hubristic” policies. He referenced Pakistan’s “quid pro quo plus” response to Indian aggression in May, warning that Pakistan will not tolerate intimidation. He also called India’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty illegal and vowed to raise the issue on global platforms.

Position on Global Conflicts

Dar condemned the US strike on Iran’s nuclear sites and criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza. He reiterated Pakistan’s support for a sovereign Palestinian state and underscored Islamabad’s commitment to international law and peacebuilding efforts.
