PM Launches PowerSmart App, Ends PTV Fee in Bills to Curb Electricity Theft

In a bold move to tackle electricity theft and billing fraud, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched the new “PowerSmart Mobile App – Apna Meter, Apni Reading” in Islamabad on Saturday. The app allows users to submit their own meter readings, aiming to replace manual meter checking and reduce overbilling complaints.

Empowering Consumers with Technology

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of adopting technology to resolve long-standing issues in the power sector. The PowerSmart app is designed to bring transparency to the billing process. Consumers can now record their own meter readings, cutting out the traditional meter reader and preventing manipulation.

The government has allocated Rs316 million for a nationwide media campaign to promote the app. To ensure ease of use, instructions will be available in Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, and Balochi.

Major Relief: PTV Fee Removed from Bills

In a welcome development for electricity users, PM Shehbaz Sharif also announced the removal of the Pakistan Television (PTV) license fee from monthly power bills. This measure will provide direct financial relief to consumers already burdened by high utility costs.

Smart Strategy to Reduce Losses

Electricity theft costs Pakistan’s economy an estimated Rs600 billion each year. It fuels the circular debt crisis, increases power tariffs, and adds pressure on paying consumers. By encouraging self-metering and digital tools, the government aims to enhance billing accuracy and boost revenue collection.

The initiative is part of a broader energy reform strategy that includes promoting solar energy. According to the Prime Minister, solar adoption has already led to a decline in electricity demand, easing pressure on the national grid.

Call for Public Participation

The Prime Minister urged citizens to use the PowerSmart app actively. He emphasized that curbing electricity theft requires joint efforts between the government and the public. Transparency, accountability, and digital solutions are key pillars in the government’s plan to stabilize the energy sector.
