NDMA Warns of Urban Flooding and Flash Flood Risk

The urban flooding risk in several regions of Pakistan has surged as the National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) issued weather alerts for heavy rainfall and potential flash floods from Sunday to Thursday.

Heavy Rainfall Across Key Regions

Significant rainfall is expected in Kashmir, northeast Punjab, Islamabad, the Potohar region, and upper to central Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These areas are likely to experience intense downpours, increasing the chances of water accumulation and localized emergencies.

Urban Flooding Alert for Cities

NEOC highlighted that urban flooding could hit low-lying areas of central Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, and Kohat. Likewise, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Chakwal, and Attock in the Potohar region are at high risk. Northeastern Punjab cities like Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Narowal, Jhelum, and Mandi Bahauddin could also face rain-related disruptions.

Faisalabad and Sargodha divisions may see significant rainfall, triggering localized flooding and hampering normal life.

Flash Flood Risk in Northern Regions

Flash flooding is likely in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—particularly Hazara and Malakand Divisions—and in the Jhelum and Poonch Valleys of Azad Kashmir. The Pir Panjal range in northeastern Punjab is also vulnerable.

NDMA has warned of low-level flooding in River Kabul at Nowshera and its tributaries, with moderate flows in the Swat River. Rivers downstream of Tarbela Dam and the Chenab River at Khanki and Qadirabad could also experience rising water levels.

Southern Sindh Faces Rain Emergency

Southern Sindh, especially Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, and Karachi, is forecast to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall until July 5. Urban flooding may intensify from Wednesday in low-lying areas of Karachi Division.

Public Advisory and Preparedness

NDMA has urged local administrations to activate contingency plans and ensure timely warnings in regional languages. Citizens should stay updated, avoid risky travel, and prepare emergency kits. For real-time alerts, people can use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App and follow official updates.
