US, Pakistan Pledge to Support Middle East Stability After Iran-Israel War

In a key diplomatic move, the United States and Pakistan have agreed to collaborate in promoting Middle East peace following recent tensions sparked by a 12-day war between Iran and Israel. The agreement came after a phone call between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Post-War Diplomacy Takes Shape

The conversation followed Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear and military sites on June 13, and subsequent US strikes on June 22. The offensive severely damaged Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, according to President Donald Trump, who claimed the action set Tehran’s program back by years.

Pakistan’s Regional Role

Pakistan has actively engaged in diplomatic efforts with Saudi Arabia, Iran, China, and Qatar to defuse escalating tensions. Iran’s retaliatory attack on a US base in Qatar further heightened fears of a regional spillover. During the call, PM Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to a constructive role in resolving the crisis.

Rubio: “Iran Must Never Have Nukes”

US Secretary Rubio emphasized that Iran must never be allowed to develop or acquire nuclear weapons. He and Sharif agreed on the urgency of maintaining regional stability and fostering durable peace between Israel and Iran. The US praised Pakistan’s engagement in regional diplomacy and acknowledged Islamabad’s support for peace efforts.

Pakistan Condemns Escalation

Pakistan strongly condemned both the Israeli and US strikes on Iran, while also expressing concern over Iran’s retaliation. It urged all sides to uphold international law and the United Nations Charter. PM Sharif emphasized the need for restraint and diplomacy to avoid further escalation.

Praise for US Mediation on India Front

Sharif also thanked the US for mediating the ceasefire between Pakistan and India following last month’s four-day military standoff. The brief but intense conflict claimed over 70 lives and was halted by a US-brokered truce on May 10. However, tensions linger as India maintains its suspension of a key water-sharing treaty.

Both sides agreed to strengthen bilateral ties, with a focus on enhancing trade and cooperation in key sectors.
