CEC Appointment Hits Snag as Speaker Rejects Committee Request

Share the latest news updates

The ongoing deadlock over the CEC appointment process escalated after National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq turned down Opposition Leader Omar Ayub’s request to form a parliamentary committee for nominating the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and two Election Commission members.

Speaker Insists on Required Consultations

In a formal letter to Omar Ayub, the Speaker said the committee can only be formed after mandatory consultations between the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader. Only after agreeing on names—or submitting separate lists—can those nominations be forwarded to the National Assembly.

Opposition Pushes for Committee Formation

Earlier, Ayub had demanded immediate formation of the committee, citing the constitutional requirement to appoint a new CEC. He accused the government of delaying the process and urged timely action to maintain the Election Commission’s credibility.

CEC’s Term Already Expired

Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja and two ECP members completed their term on January 26, 2025. However, under Article 215 of the Constitution, they continue to serve until successors are appointed.

Legal Timeline Missed

According to election laws, new appointments must be completed within 45 days of term expiry. Despite the deadline passing, political leaders have failed to reach consensus.

How the Process Works

If both leaders agree on three names for CEC, the list is forwarded to a parliamentary committee for approval. If they fail to agree, each leader must submit three names separately. The final decision lies with the committee, which selects the new CEC from those recommendations.

Gridlock Threatens Election Credibility

The stalled CEC appointment process signals a growing rift between the ruling coalition and the opposition. Observers warn that further delay could undermine electoral transparency and shake public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions. A timely resolution through dialogue remains crucial.
