Share the latest news updates

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert, warning of dangerously high temperatures across the country from June 9 to June 12. A developing high-pressure system is driving this extreme weather pattern, putting millions at risk.

Temperatures to Exceed Normal Levels

According to the Met Office, central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan will experience daytime temperatures 5 to 7°C above average. Meanwhile, upper and central Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan will see a rise of 4 to 6°C above normal.

The soaring temperatures could increase the risk of heatstroke, dehydration, and other health concerns, especially among vulnerable groups.

Extreme Conditions in Plains

With the heat intensifying, dust storms and gusty winds are expected across the plains. These weather events may disrupt daily life and reduce visibility, posing additional hazards for commuters and outdoor workers.

On Sunday, parts of the country already experienced extreme heat. Jacobabad recorded the highest temperature at 50°C, followed closely by Dadu and Sibi at 49°C. Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, and Shaheed Benazirabad also faced scorching conditions with 47°C.

Public Urged to Take Precautions

People should avoid direct sunlight, wear light clothing, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Experts emphasize the need to avoid unnecessary travel and strenuous activities during the day. Staying in shaded or cool environments can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Impact on Snowmelt in Northern Regions

The Met Office also warned that higher temperatures in the north may accelerate snowmelt. This could increase water flow in rivers and raise the risk of flooding in some areas.

As the heatwave continues, authorities are monitoring the situation closely and may issue further advisories. Citizens are advised to stay updated through official weather reports and take all recommended safety measures.
