Students across Punjab will attend school on May 28 as the provincial education department has decided not to declare a holiday. Instead, schools will observe Youm-e-Takbeer activities with patriotic programmes and competitions to honour Pakistan’s nuclear achievements.
Schools to Host Events for National Pride
According to a notification issued by the Punjab School Education Department, all government schools will hold special morning assemblies. These will include the national anthem, prayers, and speeches highlighting the historical significance of Youm-e-Takbeer.
The department instructed District Education Authorities to ensure that each school delivers a “positive social message for peace and courage” throughout the day.
District Competitions and Cash Prizes
To further engage students, district-level competitions will take place. These include speech contests on nuclear capability and national security, as well as art, poster-making, and national song (Milli Naghme) performances. Winners in each category at the district level will receive Rs50,000 as a cash prize.

Additionally, students and staff will take a pledge to contribute to Pakistan’s peace, development, and scientific progress.
Summer Break to Be Announced After Ceremony
Officials confirmed that summer vacations will be declared after the completion of the May 28 ceremonies. This decision aligns the holiday calendar with the national observance while ensuring students participate in the day’s educational and patriotic engagements.
Youm-e-Takbeer and National Security
Youm-e-Takbeer marks the anniversary of Pakistan’s nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, in Chaghai, Balochistan. These tests established Pakistan as the seventh nuclear power globally and the first in the Islamic world. The tests were a direct response to India’s nuclear activity, reinforcing Pakistan’s commitment to national sovereignty and strategic balance in South Asia.
While May 28 is a gazetted holiday nationwide, Punjab schools will instead mark the day with educational activities aimed at deepening students’ understanding of its importance.
