Pakistan and Iran Push Forward on Gas Pipeline Project Talks

>Pakistan and Iran have renewed their commitment to resolving the long-delayed Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline through mutual dialogue and cooperation. The agreement came during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Tehran on the invitation of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Bilateral Meeting in Tehran

In a high-level meeting, both leaders stressed the need for swift action on the gas pipeline, which has faced years of delay due to international sanctions and regional challenges. Prime Minister Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s desire to enhance trade volumes and strengthen economic ties with its western neighbor.

Acknowledging Regional Support

The Prime Minister thanked Iran for its support during Pakistan’s recent tensions with India. He appreciated Iran’s offer to mediate and its concern for regional peace. Sharif also briefed President Pezeshkian on India’s aggressive posturing and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining the ceasefire.

Call for Deeper Regional Cooperation

Recognizing centuries-old historical and cultural ties, both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation across all sectors. Sharif emphasized that terrorism threatens the entire region and called for joint efforts between the two countries to counter external destabilizing forces.

Focus on Kashmir and Palestine

Sharif reiterated that resolving the Kashmir issue in line with UN resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people remains vital for regional peace. He also strongly condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling for an immediate end to violence and advocating for a two-state solution.

Afghanistan’s Role in Regional Stability

Both sides agreed that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is crucial to the region. The leaders reaffirmed their shared interest in supporting peace efforts in the neighboring country.

Invitation and Diplomatic Engagements

President Pezeshkian welcomed Sharif and praised the growing bilateral relationship. Prime Minister Sharif extended an invitation to the Iranian president to visit Pakistan soon. The visit included a guard of honor and delegation-level talks with key figures such as Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.
