The year 2024 witnessed a sharp rise in global civilian casualties caused by explosive weapons. A new report by Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) highlights Israel’s military operations as the main driver behind this trend.

Gaza saw the highest number of civilian deaths from explosive weapons last year. Civilian harm rose by 65% compared to 2023. This sharp increase followed Israel’s military campaign called Operation Swords of Iron. The operation was launched in response to attacks by Hamas.

According to AOAV, Gaza alone accounted for 59% of global civilian fatalities from explosive violence reported in English-language media. The scale of destruction was unprecedented. Homes, hospitals, schools, and marketplaces became battlegrounds. Civilians bore the brunt.

Violence Spread Across the Region

The conflict did not stay within Gaza’s borders. Israel expanded its military operations into Lebanon. Airstrikes also hit several other regions including the West Bank, Syria, Iran, and Yemen.

In Lebanon, civilian casualties surged dramatically. The country recorded a 6,354% increase in casualties, rising from just 141 in 2023 to 9,100 in 2024. This made Lebanon the third most affected nation by explosive violence.

The West Bank also saw a notable spike. Civilian deaths rose by 29%, from 208 in 2023 to 268 in 2024. Israeli strikes in these areas have sparked fears of a wider regional war.

Regional Tensions on the Rise

The expansion of conflict has triggered rising tensions across the Middle East. Explosive violence has increased not only in war zones but also in neighboring countries. Israeli aerial strikes have reached at least six territories.

Security experts warn that the fallout from the Gaza conflict may last for years. Civilians in bordering countries are increasingly at risk. The fear of escalation looms large over the region.

Global Consequences

AOAV’s findings paint a grim picture. Explosive violence has reached alarming levels. The use of airstrikes and heavy weapons in populated areas has led to mass civilian suffering.

The group calls on governments and international bodies to take urgent action. Protecting civilians and upholding international law must be a priority, the report urges.

In 2024, explosive weapons killed more civilians than ever before. Israel’s expanded operations, especially in Gaza and Lebanon, were central to this deadly trend. As the world watches, the need for peace and accountability has never been more urgent.
