In a major breakthrough, India and Pakistan have agreed to withdraw troops deployed during their recent military clash. The agreement marks a step toward stability after a deadly conflict in Kashmir. Officials confirmed that the pullback, part of what’s being called the “Kashmir Ceasefire,” will be completed by the end of May.
High Toll and Swift Escalation
The latest conflict erupted on May 7 following an attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir. India blamed Pakistan for backing the assailants—an accusation Islamabad strongly denied. What followed was a sharp escalation involving drones, missiles, airstrikes, and artillery fire along the Line of Control (LoC). Over four days, more than 70 people were killed.
Ceasefire and Diplomatic Intervention
The violence abruptly halted when U.S. President Donald Trump brokered a surprise ceasefire. This agreement, still holding, helped prevent further escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
A senior Pakistani security official told AFP that both countries have now agreed to move troops and weapons back to peacetime positions. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the plan involves a phased withdrawal, mostly from forward areas near the LoC.

Steps Toward De-escalation
The Indian army confirmed the arrangement last week, stating that both sides had committed to immediate steps to reduce their military presence near the border. Though the initial plan was to complete the process in 10 days, minor logistical delays slowed progress.
The decision to de-escalate comes amid rising international concern over the volatile situation in Kashmir. Since their independence from British rule in 1947, India and Pakistan have fought multiple wars over the region, which both claim in full.
Moving Forward Carefully
While the troop withdrawal offers hope, the region remains tense. Trust between the two nations is fragile. However, this recent cooperation could open the door for further dialogue. For now, the world watches as both sides take cautious steps away from the brink.
