Share the latest news updates

In a historic move, the federal cabinet has approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir to the rank of field marshal. The decision follows his pivotal leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and the broader conflict with India, referred to as Marka-i-Haq.

Recognition for Strategic Command

Chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the federal cabinet unanimously supported the elevation. A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office highlighted General Munir’s strategic direction and his coordination of Pakistan’s armed forces during the high-stakes confrontation with India.

General Munir led the response after India’s airstrikes on Punjab and Azad Kashmir on May 6-7. Pakistan’s military responded by shooting down five Indian jets and intercepting several drones. The escalation culminated in a ceasefire on May 10, brokered by the United States. Officials have since clarified that the truce remains in effect without an expiry date.

Highest Military Honour

Field marshal is the highest rank in Pakistan’s army hierarchy, based on British military tradition. General Mohammad Ayub Khan was previously the only officer to receive this title. Now, General Asim Munir becomes the second, recognised for his leadership and bravery in safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty.

Government’s Statement and Further Decisions

The cabinet praised General Munir’s courage, calling his leadership “unparalleled” and key to Pakistan’s “historic victory” in the conflict. Prime Minister Shehbaz also briefed President Asif Ali Zardari about the promotion.

Additionally, the government has extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zahar Ahmed Babar Sidhu. Plans are underway to honour military personnel, martyrs, and civilians for their roles during the operation with national awards.

COAS Responds to Honour

In a statement via ISPR, General Munir thanked the nation, armed forces, and government. He dedicated the honour to the “millions of Asims” who have served and sacrificed for Pakistan. He called the rank not a personal achievement, but a tribute to the collective strength of the nation and its defenders.
