The Cuauhtemoc snapped all three of its masts as it collided with the bridge. The vessel, carrying 277 personnel, became wedged under the structure. Mayor Adams confirmed that two people died and two others remain in critical condition. Nineteen others sustained various injuries.

Panic on Deck

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic. Nick Corso, a Brooklyn resident, said he saw sailors hanging from the masts and people screaming as the collision happened. He noted a crew member at the back of the ship signaling bystanders to move away from the walkway.

New York police officials explained that the ship lost power just as the captain was maneuvering it, forcing the vessel to drift uncontrollably toward the bridge abutment on the Brooklyn side.

No Structural Damage to Bridge

The New York Department of Transportation confirmed that the Brooklyn Bridge did not suffer structural damage. The bridge was closed temporarily for safety inspections but was reopened within 40 minutes.

Ship Was Bound for Iceland

The Cuauhtemoc, built in 1982 with a mast height of 158 feet, had just arrived in New York four days earlier and was en route to Iceland.

However The Mexican Navy pledged full transparency in the investigation and reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of its personnel.
