Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to lead Pakistan’s peace diplomacy following the recent military standoff with India. The decision comes after a fragile ceasefire, brokered by the United States, halted days of intense air strikes and drone exchanges between the two nuclear-armed nations.
Mission for Peace
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Bilawal said he was contacted by PM Shehbaz on Saturday and asked to represent Pakistan’s “case for peace” globally. He accepted the assignment with “honour” and pledged to serve the country during this critical time.
The newly formed delegation will highlight Pakistan’s peace stance while exposing what it calls India’s aggression and disinformation campaign. Details regarding the full delegation and international engagements are yet to be announced.

Backdrop of Escalation
The military conflict erupted after an April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian-occupied Kashmir. India blamed Pakistan without evidence and responded with strikes on Punjab and Azad Kashmir on May 6–7, causing civilian casualties. Pakistan retaliated by downing five Indian jets and intercepting Israeli-made drones. Tensions cooled only after urgent U.S. diplomatic intervention led to a ceasefire on May 10.
Global Alignment and Rival Narratives
While China voiced strong support for Pakistan, India found itself largely isolated, with only Israel offering open endorsement. Reports suggest New Delhi has started retaliating diplomatically against nations that sided with Islamabad.
In parallel, India announced seven all-party delegations to present its case on terrorism and national unity to global powers. Lawmakers from major Indian political parties will visit key countries, including UN Security Council members, to promote India’s narrative.
PM Shehbaz Reaffirms Peace Offer
Reinforcing Pakistan’s peace diplomacy, PM Shehbaz recently extended an olive branch to India. He called for a comprehensive dialogue to resolve core issues, especially Kashmir and water disputes. He emphasized Pakistan’s heavy toll from terrorism and said peace and cooperation remain the only path forward. “We have taught a lesson, but we still seek peace,” he added.
