Heatwave Grips Pakistan as Temperatures Soar Beyond Normal

Share the latest news updates

Pakistan is reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures rising dangerously across urban and rural regions. On Saturday, scorching sun and dry winds made life difficult, especially for schoolchildren and residents in densely populated areas.

Temperatures Climb Above Seasonal Norms

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a heatwave alert for Punjab, warning that temperatures may remain 4°C to 7°C above normal until May 20. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that Lahore recorded a minimum of 28°C, with forecasts predicting a peak of 44°C in the coming days.

Weather officials ruled out any chance of rain, indicating the hot and dry spell would likely continue for at least the next 72 hours.

Children Bear the Brunt in Under-Equipped Schools

The soaring heat has severely affected educational institutions, particularly smaller private schools lacking basic infrastructure. Many schools in cities like Lahore operate in cramped buildings without proper ventilation, cooling systems, or clean drinking water. Conditions worsen in rural districts, especially during closing hours when heat peaks.

Due to the worsening situation, the Punjab government is considering temporary closure of schools. A decision is expected following a meeting later this week.

Public Health and Safety Concerns Rise

Health experts have urged citizens to stay indoors during peak hours, remain hydrated, and wear protective head coverings when outside.

Environmental Hazards Add to Air Quality Woes

Meanwhile, thick smoke blanketed stretches of the Lahore-Islamabad and Lahore-Sialkot motorways. This was due to farmers setting fire to crop stubble, violating environmental regulations and worsening the already poor air quality.

As the heatwave persists, citizens are advised to take necessary precautions and limit outdoor activities until temperatures normalize.
