Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi was rushed to the hospital early Saturday morning. He was moved from Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) after complaining of chest pain.

According to his lawyer, Qureshi felt discomfort following the Fajr prayer. Jail authorities responded swiftly and transferred him to PIC for medical evaluation. His condition remains under observation.

Family Confirms Health Concerns

Zain Qureshi, Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s son, confirmed the news. He said his father experienced chest pain early in the morning. Medical staff at the jail quickly examined him.

“He was then shifted to PIC. Doctors are monitoring him and will keep him under observation for a few more days,” Zain added. He urged the public to pray for his father’s recovery.

Qureshi’s daughter, Meher Bano, also shared an update on X (formerly Twitter). “My brave baba is under observation in PIC. I would like to thank everyone for their concern. Please pray for him and all those who are under unjust incarceration,” she wrote.

In Jail Since May 2023 Unrest

Qureshi has been in custody since May 2023. He was arrested after nationwide unrest broke out following PTI founder Imran Khan’s detention. Several acts of violence and vandalism were reported during the protests.

The PTI leadership insists their arrests are politically motivated. However, the government accuses them of planning and inciting illegal demonstrations.

In July 2024, a Lahore anti-terrorism court (ATC) indicted Qureshi in a case involving the alleged attack and arson at Shadman police station. The case was filed by the Shadman police.

Transferred Between Jails for Security Reasons

In July 2024, Qureshi was shifted from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore. Law enforcement agencies requested the move, citing logistical challenges. They said frequent court hearings in Lahore made transportation difficult and risky.

This wasn’t his first indictment. In November 2023, Qureshi and several other senior PTI leaders were charged by another Lahore ATC. The cases relate to the violent events of May 9, 2023.

Despite the multiple charges, Qureshi has pleaded not guilty.
