KARACHI: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Muhammad Aurangzeb, has announced the launch of Pakistan’s first Green Sukuk bond, aimed at financing environmentally sustainable projects.

Speaking via video link at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the minister congratulated the PSX team as the market closed at a record high, reflecting strong investor confidence.

Step Toward Climate Action

The Green Sukuk is a major step in Pakistan’s efforts to fight climate change, which Aurangzeb described as a serious threat to the country. He stressed that sustainable financing is essential for Pakistan’s future.

Aurangzeb also called for adopting Malaysia’s green economy model, and said Pakistan is working to secure climate financing from international partners.

Global Confidence in Pakistan’s Economy

The finance minister shared insights from his recent meetings with investors in Washington and London. He said there is growing global satisfaction with Pakistan’s macroeconomic stability, due to better inflation control, a rise in foreign exchange reserves, and steady fiscal reforms.

He also confirmed that preparations for the 2025-26 federal budget are underway. Stakeholders are actively sharing input to shape a strong and forward-looking economic plan.

Panda Bonds Coming Soon

Aurangzeb reiterated that Pakistan will launch Panda Bonds in June 2025 to boost the country’s access to China’s capital markets. The government hopes to raise around $200 million from Chinese investors through this initiative.

The Panda Bond is part of Pakistan’s broader plan to move towards an export-driven economy, with a focus on achieving sustainability in the balance of payments.

The finance minister also mentioned that the nation is celebrating Thanksgiving Day with enthusiasm. The celebrations reflect public confidence in Pakistan’s economic recovery and green development path.
