Russia and Ukraine are expected to hold direct talks in Türkiye soon, marking a potential diplomatic breakthrough in the prolonged conflict.
Sources familiar with the negotiations say preparations are underway. The two sides have agreed, in principle, to meet on neutral ground in Türkiye. The date remains unconfirmed, but officials are optimistic.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the talks in person. His absence raised questions globally. However, U.S. President Donald Trump, currently on a Middle East tour, played down the move.
“I didn’t think it was possible for Putin to go if I’m not there,” Trump told reporters during a business roundtable in Qatar. “Why would he go if I’m not going?” he added.
Trump also hinted at possible involvement. “If something happened, I’d go on Friday if it was appropriate. We can help the world psychologically,” he said.
Analysts say Trump’s comments could indicate a backchannel role or a future trip. For now, U.S. officials have not confirmed any formal involvement in the Türkiye talks.

Meanwhile, Kremlin watchers point to an old story about Putin’s childhood in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. In a 2000 interview, Putin recalled chasing rats in his apartment building. One large rat, when cornered, turned and chased him back.
“I got a quick and lasting lesson in the meaning of the word cornered,” he said.
Experts say this moment shaped his worldview. Many believe Putin sees Russia’s current position similarly—as cornered, and ready to lash out if pushed too far.
With diplomatic efforts gaining momentum, the world watches closely. Whether these talks in Türkiye will lead to lasting peace or further stalemate remains uncertain.
