Microsoft Unveils Affordable Laptops Powered by Qualcomm

In a strategic move to expand access to AI laptops, Microsoft has introduced its most budget-friendly AI-powered Surface devices to date. The company announced on Tuesday that it will launch new Surface models—equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus chips—at prices aimed at students and young professionals.
Surface Devices Starting at $799
The latest Surface lineup includes a 13-inch Surface Laptop starting at $899 and a 12-inch Surface Pro tablet beginning at $799. Both devices will go on sale starting May 20. These prices place them below or between Apple’s MacBook Air, which starts at $999, and iPad Air Pro models, priced from $649 to $999.

Copilot+ Features Now More Accessible
What sets these new Surface models apart is their compatibility with Microsoft’s “Copilot+” AI features. Previously available only on higher-end machines, these tools allow users to perform tasks through natural language prompts. For example, users can ask how to change system settings or request AI-generated drafts of Word documents.
Until now, Copilot+ required premium hardware, limiting its use to devices over $1,000. Microsoft is now breaking that barrier by introducing lower-priced options with the same AI capabilities.
Expanding Reach with Qualcomm Chips
The inclusion of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus chips ensures strong performance while maintaining affordability. Microsoft’s focus is clear: deliver AI productivity tools to a wider audience without compromising speed or efficiency.
Focus on Young Professionals and Students
According to Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows and Devices, these new Surface devices are tailored for users just starting their careers. “Affordability is going to be important,” he emphasized during a press briefing on April 28.
