At the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris, Fei-Fei Li, a leading AI researcher from Stanford University and founder of World Labs, called for balanced AI governance. She stressed the need to base policies on scientific reality rather than sensationalism, urging leaders to support a diverse AI ecosystem rather than concentrating power in a few big companies.

A Call for an Inclusive AI Ecosystem

Addressing the summit at the Grand Palais, Li highlighted the importance of academic institutions, open-source communities, and the public sector in AI’s development. She warned that if a handful of corporations dominate AI research, the industry will suffer. A lack of curiosity-driven research, multidisciplinary collaboration, and open educational resources could stall AI’s potential.

“We need a far healthier and more vibrant AI ecosystem,” she told delegates. “If AI is going to change the world, everyone from all walks of life must have a role in shaping its progress.”

Regulation Must Be Based on Science, Not Hype

Li expressed concerns about AI governance being driven by fear and science fiction narratives. Without naming specific governments or policies, she criticized misleading regulations that stem from exaggerated AI risks.

“So much of today’s AI discussions are fueled by sensationalism, leading to misguided policies,” she said. “We must adopt a scientific approach to measure AI’s capabilities and limitations, creating precise and actionable regulations.”

She argued that overregulation could hinder AI research, limiting opportunities for innovation. Instead of imposing unnecessary restrictions, governments should focus on practical AI applications while ensuring ethical use.

A Pragmatic Approach to AI Governance

Li urged policymakers to take a pragmatic stance rather than an ideological one. She emphasized that AI, if developed responsibly, has the potential to enhance human lives, boost productivity, and create new opportunities.

“Instead of restricting AI’s upstream research, we should channel efforts into its real-world applications,” she said. “This will help us maximize its benefits while safeguarding against harmful consequences.”

AI’s Role in Shaping the Future

Li believes historians will look back at this era as the first true age of AI, a period with civilizational consequences. While she acknowledged concerns about job displacement, she remains optimistic that AI can augment and empower humanity—provided the right decisions are made.

Her speech set the stage for further discussions among global leaders and tech executives, who are expected to issue a joint statement at the summit’s conclusion. Their decisions will likely shape AI’s trajectory for years to come.
