Islamabad: Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, chaired the 11th Board Meeting of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) on Thursday. The meeting focused on structural reforms, better event management, and strategic planning.
The board, led by Chairman Zubair Motiwala, discussed a 14-point agenda. The meeting was attended by key members, including senators and senior officials.
Call for Structural Reforms
The Minister emphasized the need to restructure TDAP for better efficiency. New board members were briefed on TDAP’s functions, structure, and goals.
“We need to improve TDAP’s framework to achieve meaningful results,” he said.
The Minister highlighted concerns about security arrangements at events like TEXPO. He proposed creating a Director General (DG) Security position to oversee protocols.
“Events with ambassadors and dignitaries require a dedicated professional to manage security,” he added.
The board agreed to initiate the process through the Ministry of Commerce and Finance Division.

Event Management Overhaul
The Minister criticized TDAP’s event management practices. He pointed out logistical failures at TEXPO, including inadequate cooling systems and temporary VIP setups.
He instructed the board to create strong Terms of Reference (TORs) for event management services. “Vendors should focus on quality, not self-promotion,” he said.
To ensure smooth operations, the Minister proposed establishing a permanent TDAP office at the Expo Center.
Focus on Minerals Sector
The Minister stressed the importance of mineral development. He suggested organizing exhibitions dedicated to the sector to attract investors.
He also called for reclassifying minerals under the “industry” category to enhance visibility and support.
Participation in International Exhibitions
The board discussed TDAP’s involvement in international exhibitions. The Minister demanded cost evaluations and strategic justifications for participation.
“Every penny spent must deliver results,” he remarked.
Infrastructure Upgrades
The Minister directed immediate action to improve TDAP offices in Lahore and Quetta. He also approved the construction of a new office in Islamabad.
Better working environments would help staff achieve more, he noted.
Improving Board Functionality
The Minister proposed increasing the number of board subcommittees. He also suggested modifying office layouts for better accessibility.
The boardroom entrance will be repositioned to improve movement during meetings.
Commitment to Reforms
The meeting ended with clear directives. The Minister urged the board to implement past recommendations and show progress before the next session.
