Polling Underway for Sindh By-Elections

Polling is in progress across 18 districts in Sindh, including Karachi and Hyderabad. Voting will continue uninterrupted until 5 p.m. today. A total of 68 candidates are competing for 10 positions of Chairman, Vice Chairman, and General Member Ward seats in Karachi, where heightened security measures are in effect.

In Karachi, 167 polling stations are operational. Out of these, 136 have been marked as highly sensitive. This includes 11 polling stations in UC 9 TMC Malir and all 31 in UC 7 TMC Liaquatabad, categorized as highly sensitive due to past security concerns.

In UC 8 TMC Model Colony, 21 stations have been classified as sensitive, while UC 13 TMC Sadar has seen seven stations marked as highly sensitive, five as sensitive, and five as normal. To ensure voter safety, CCTV cameras are active in the most sensitive areas. Heavy police presence has been organized, with 16 to 18 personnel deployed at highly sensitive stations and 8 to 12 officers at sensitive ones.

Polling Outside Karachi

Outside Karachi, voting is ongoing in districts such as Hyderabad, Sukkur, Nawabshah, Ghotki, Matiari, Tando Allahyar, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Naushahro Feroze. In some areas, candidates have been elected unopposed, so no voting is required. These districts include Umerkot, Sanghar, and Shikarpur.

In Hyderabad, voters are casting ballots for Chairman and Vice Chairman in UCs 125 and 140, along with the Vice Chairman and General Member Ward 1 in additional areas. Similar positions are contested in Sukkur, Nawabshah, and other districts, where several candidates aim to secure local leadership seats.

Ghotki Sees Intense Competition

In Ghotki, the race for the Chairman of Obaro Union Council Kum Shaheed is highly competitive. The main contenders include People’s Party candidate Zulfiqar Chachar and independent candidates Arbab Bohar and Siddique Kosh. The Kum Shaheed Union Council, with 11,273 registered voters, is experiencing a steady turnout as voters arrive to make their choice.

Voter Turnout and Security

Security remains the top priority in these by-elections, especially in sensitive and highly sensitive areas. Police and law enforcement personnel are closely monitoring the situation to maintain a peaceful polling environment. Voter turnout has been steady so far, with officials expecting increased participation in the later hours as polling continues under close supervision by local authorities.
