Rita Ora Pays Tribute to Liam Payne at MTV Awards
Manchester: Nearly a month has passed since former One Direction member Liam Payne’s tragic death. At the MTV Europe Music Awards, Rita Ora paid him an emotional tribute. Ora, who collaborated with Payne on their 2018 hit single For You, honored him during the ceremony, calling him “one of the kindest people that I knew.”
The tribute came as a heartfelt moment during an otherwise upbeat night. Ora, dressed in a dark suit, paused her high-energy hosting to reflect on Payne’s life and impact.
A Heartfelt Tribute to a Beloved Friend
Towards the end of the ceremony, Ora addressed the audience with a personal message. “I just want to take a moment to remember someone who was very, very dear to us,” she said, her voice reflecting the somber moment. “We lost him recently, and he was a big part of the MTV world and my world. Liam Payne was one of the kindest people that I knew.”

Ora continued, speaking of Payne’s generosity and warmth. “He had the biggest heart, always the first to offer help,” she shared. “He brought joy to every room he walked into and left a lasting mark on the world.” She then introduced a short tribute video featuring Payne, accompanied by a snippet of One Direction’s song Night Changes, which added an emotional resonance to the moment.
Taylor Swift Makes History at the EMAs
The night also celebrated other achievements, with Taylor Swift making history by becoming the first person to win the Best Artist award three times in the EMAs’ 30-year history. Swift won a total of four awards, including Best Artist, Best Video (for Fortnight), Best Live Act, and Best US Artist. However, Swift was not in attendance as she was supporting her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, during his game against the Denver Broncos.
Swift’s four wins reinforced her dominant position in the global music industry, even as she prepares to resume the final leg of her Eras tour in Canada this week.
Other Winners of the Night
Alongside Swift, several other artists received honors at the EMAs. British singer Raye, American artist Sabrina Carpenter, South African rising star Tyla, and American singer Benson Boone were among the night’s winners. The event marked the first time the EMAs have been held in the UK since 2017 and Ora’s third time as host.
